It craves nourishment and encouragement but requires immense care and attention. It will shrivel if neglected, but if well-tended to, it will forge a foundation upon which to evolve into a sturdy, strong, unshakable oak.
Some trainers focus on formulating an endless array of “new and improved” exercise routines that include often-unnecessary curveballs, leaving clients exhausted and uncertain about their next training session. Other trainers break boundaries and bark orders, touting “tried-and-true” traditions that lack flexibility and send clients out the door.
To be fair, there are merits to these approaches, but thirteen years of trial and error have taught me one thing: above all else, consistency is king.
My fitness philosophy is simple:
Embody the acorn and grow slow—just one percent—each and every day.
At eighteen, I carried two-hundred pounds on a five-nine frame, never having entered a gym and not once ever mistaken for a future fitness fanatic. I was unfit, unhealthy, and often felt alone. I knew for a fact that my lifestyle was to blame, but I was also aware that others had attained peace by altering their own.
My sophomore year of college yielded my first workout partner, who introduced me to weightlifting as a means of self-defense. Starting with simple straight sets, I quickly learned that the aesthetic he possessed was achievable through just a few relatively straightforward steps.
Within just a few months, the foundation had been laid and the seed had been sown:
I had come to view the gym as a playground, a laboratory, and most importantly, a place of refuge.
My efforts have availed the following advice:
Straight sets yield stagnant plateaus, and circuit training elicits exhaustion;
five-by-fives lead lifters to injuries, and drop sets leave muscles dying.
But when I learned of the power of progressive overload (“PO”), my body quickly began to realize results. By varying the weight volume throughout each exercise, PO leverages physiological science to encompass all aspects of anatomical growth:
muscular endurance, mass-building hypertrophy, and pure power.
My routine has been devoted to mastering this method,
and as your personal trainer, my promise is this:
I will educate you, I will excite you, and I will empower you to be
the strongest, sturdiest, most unshakable You you can be.
